Order & Ranking: Important Tips and Tricks in Hindi

Formulas to determine the positioning of a person

Left + Right = Total + 1

Left = Total + 1 – Right

Right = 1 + 1 – left

Total = left + Right

Note : the above formulas are only for a single person’s position

Reasoning Order & Ranking – Tips and Tricks with Example

To find the total number of the person sitting in a row or column:

Order & Ranking tips

When the rank of a person is given from both sides (i.e. from left and right both) of the row:

(R1 + R2) – 1 = Total

Example: – Sachin is 18th from left and 19th from right in a row. Total number of students in a row is,

(18 + 19) – 1 = 37 – 1 = 36.

When the rank of two persons and number of persons sitting between them is given:

(R1 + R2) + Number of middle persons.

Examples: – In a class, Ram rank is 9th from the left and Shyam rank is 7th from the right. If 6 students are sitting between them then calculate the total number of candidates in the class.

(9 + 7) + 6 = 22

To find rank from either left/top or from right/bottom side:

(Total + 1) – Given rank = Required rank.

Rani is 24th from the right in a row of 40 girls. What is her position from the left end?

(40 + 1) – 24 = 41 – 24 = 17.

To find the number of persons sitting between any two persons:

For simple case:

Total – (Rank from left + Rank from Right).

In a class of 120 students, Ram is 44th from the left and Shyam is 46th from the right. Find the total number of students sitting between them?

120 – (44 + 46) = 120 – 90 = 30

Latest Current Affairs

For overlapping case:

(Rank from left + Rank from right)–(Total + 2).

Example:  In a class of 90 candidates, Ram is 67th from the top and Sohan is 57th from the bottom. Number of students sitting between Ram and Sohan is

(67 + 57) = 124 > 90, so it is a case of overlapping. Thus, the total number of students sitting between them is 124 – (90+2) = 32

Note: When (Left position + Right position) > the total number of persons, it is called the case of overlapping.

नोट: जब (बाएं + दाएं) स्थिति> व्यक्तियों की कुल संख्या, इसे ओवरलैपिंग का मामला कहा जाता है।

→To find the number of maximum and minimum persons in a row or column:

When (smaller rank – number of middle persons) ≥ 2 then

Simple case will give total number of maximum persons,

(R1 + R2) + Number of middle persons.

In a class, Raman rank is 9th from the left and Suman rank is 8th from the right. If 6 students are sitting between them then calculate the maximum number of students in the class.

(8 – 6) = 2 ≥2. So, the maximum number of students in the class is (9 + 8) + 6 =23.

Overlapping case will give the total number of minimum persons,

(R1 + R2)–(Number of middle persons + 2).

Example:

In a class of 100 candidates, Raman is 67th from the left and Mohit is 57th from the right and the number of students sitting between them is 32. Calculate the number of minimum candidates in the row.

(67 + 57) = 124 > 100. So, it is a case of overlapping. Thus, the minimum number of candidates in the row is (67 + 57) – (32 + 2) = 90.

→When (smaller rank – number of middle) < 2 then
Only simple case is valid, so the total number of maximum/minimum persons is
(R1 + R2) + Number of middle persons.
Example:

In a class, Rajan’s rank is 9th from the left and Ankit rank is 7th from the right. If 6 students are sitting between them then calculate the minimum number of students in the class.
(7 – 6) = 1 < 2. So, the minimum number of students in the class is (9 + 7) + 6 = 22.

Same for vertical & Horizontal

Total + 1 = top + Bottom

Top = Total + 1 – Bottom

Bottom = Total + 1 – Top

Total = Top + Bottom

Example.1: In a row of 40 students, A is 13th from the left end, find the rank from right end.

Ans   Total = 40

13L

A’s rank from right side = Total + 1 – left

                         = 40 – 13 + 1

                         = 27 + 1

                         = 28

Example 2 : M a row ‘P’ is 25th from left end, Q is 30th from right end.  Find the total no. of students in all.

Ans.

Cant be Determined as there are more than 1 possibilities

Note: When total is not given and 2 person’s positions from left and right are given, then answer is C.D

Example 3:  In a row of children. A is 17th from left, B is 15th from right.

(1) Find the total number of children in the row

Ans. Can’t be determined, as there are more than 1 possibilities

Eg 4: In a row of some children, S is 25th from left, T is 60th from right. If they interchanged their positions, then T becomes 70th from right end

Find

 (i) What is S’s right-hand position in new position

(ii) What is T’s left hand position in earlier position?

(iii) How many numbers of persons between S and T.

(iv) What is the total strength?

(v) If ‘Q’ is placed exactly between S & T then what is his rank from left end?

Answers

1)S’s new position from left end = 35
2)T’s left hand position in earlier position = 35 L
i.e. L = 25 + 9 + 1
          = 35
